It was a pleasure to join the panel on Online Safety: the Interplay between UK Regulation and Data Protection at the IAPP Data Protection Intensive London conference on 9 March 2023.

The panel was chaired by Steve Wood of Allen and Overy, with Mark Bunting of Ofcom, Stephen Almond of the ICO, and Cecilia Alvarez of Meta.

I spoke about the privacy implications in the Online Safety Bill and some of it was reported in this article by Tech Radar: Encryption is under attack, and the Online Safety Bill isn't the only culprit, by Chiara Castro, March 14, 2023

Here is a direct quote from the article:

The UK's Online Safety Bill isn't about safety or privacy, it's both.  These were the words Stephen Almond, Director of Technology and Innovation at the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), used to describe the controversial proposed legislation during a talk at the annual IAPP's conference in London on March 9th.

What happens when private messages are being asked to be monitored? was the question raised immediately after by Monica Horten, Policy Manager at UK-based digital campaigning organization Open Rights Group. She continued by pointing out how breaking into encryption would practically mean compromising people's privacy.
