LSE: Internet Intermediaries in a Time of Political Uncertainty

It was my pleasure to organise and chair the roundtable workshop on Internet Intermediaries in a Time of Political Uncertainty at London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) on 18th May 2017.

The workshop focussed on the contemporary challenges to Internet intermediaries, especially the

increasing pressure to take down, remove or block content. A theme of the discussion was the need for transparency and accountability of intermediaries when dealing with requests to takedown or remove content. Slightly controversially, there was also a view expressed that a liability-based legal framework may no longer be appropriate given the technological changes and vastly increased scale of Internet-based content since the framework was originally drafted. The panel sessions adddressed

  • new liabilities and preventative measures
  • neccessary and proportionate policy responses
  • public duty versus private responsibility (self-regulation)

The event ended with a session on intermediaries and Brexit.
