Privacy

Privacy rights are inextricably bound to technology policy.  It is almost impossible to think of tech policy measures that do not engage privacy. New developments in artificial intelligence (AI) affect privacy rights in so many different ways and increase the dangers of privacy being interfered with. Online safety measures can only be effected with AI tools that are privacy invasive.  However,  the undercurrent to privacy policy is all about surveillance. In 2024, there are political moves  to require  private platform providers to break end-to-end encryption on  private messaging services.  These policy battles will continue for many years to come.  We will track developments here.

For those with a keen interest in privacy policy, I wrote about the legislative journey of the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)  in my book The Closing of the Net  and the principles that were agreed then, are no less relevant now.
